Soft Tissue Surgery
Surgical Procedures
Veterinary soft tissue surgery encompasses most surgical procedures that are not in the sphere of orthopedic surgery.
Our vets offer soft tissue procedures for dogs and cats suffering from ear, nose and throat disorders, as well as cardiothoracic, hepatic, gastrointestinal, urogenital, skin and oncological disorders.
If your pet requires surgery that our veterinary clinic does not offer, we will refer you to a veterinary surgeon in the Bakersfield area.

Common Soft Tissue Surgeries at Stine Veterinary Hospital
Here are some of the soft tissue surgeries commonly performed on cats and dogs at our clinic in Bakersfield:
C-Sections
Cesarean sections, commonly referred to as C-sections, are surgical procedures to remove unborn puppies or kittens from a dog or cat. This procedure is often necessary in emergencies such as obstructed labor, fetal distress, or other complications that may arise during delivery. The recovery from a C-section is usually quite quick, and complications are rare.
Entropion Surgery
Entropion is a genetic condition in which a dog's eyelids turn inward, causing the eyelashes and skin to rub against the surface of the eye. Entropion surgery corrects this issue by removing a small section of skin to adjust the position of the eyelid and stop it from rolling inward. In some cases, two surgeries may be needed to prevent overcorrection.
Soft Tissue Surgery FAQs
If your pet requires veterinary soft tissue surgery to address a health condition you are bound to have questions.
Below are a few of the most common questions that pet parents ask us about soft tissue surgery at our Bakersfield veterinary clinic.
- What happens during the consultation appointment?
During the pre-operative consultation, we will review your pet’s medical history and perform a physical examination, appropriate blood work, and any other diagnostic tests that are needed to determine the nature of your pet's condition.
Diagnostic testing may include radiographs (x-rays) or biopsies. Once the results are back, a surgery plan is made and discussed with you.
- Do the consultation appointment and surgery happen on the same day?
No. The consultation appointment is a pre-operative exam that your pet must undergo prior to surgery. Once any diagnostic test results have come back from our lab, a surgery appointment can be scheduled.
- How long does surgery take?
Surgeries usually last between one to four hours. The duration depends on the type of surgery being performed and on your pet’s specific condition.
- Does my pet have to stay overnight?
Most of our patients recover quickly from their anesthesia and surgery, your pet should be able to go home on the same day that the surgery is performed.
